Passports

American citizens or permanent residents of the United States do not need a passport to visit Canada, but should carry a birth, baptismal or voter's certificate, or other documents establishing their citizenship. Naturalized U.S. citizens should carry evidence of citizenship, such as a naturalization certificate. Visitors from all other countries must have valid national passports.

 

Money

The currency used in Newfoundland is the Canadian dollar (CAD), which is divided in 100 cents. Canada's money is issued in notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 1000 dollar and coins of 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, 1 dollar (a 'loonie') and 2 dollars (a 'twoonie').

Exchange rates (February 2008):
1 CAD = 0.99 US Dollar; or 1 US Dollar = 1.01 CAD
1 CAD = 0.68 Euro; or 1 Euro = 1.48 CAD
1 CAD = 0.51 GBP; or 1 GBP = 1.96 CAD

 

Time Zone

Newfoundland standard time (NST) is 1.5 hours ahead of eastern standard time (EST+1:30), and 3.5 hours behind of UTC (Universal Time, Coordinated) or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT/UTC-3:30).
